Mike Nelson installations are haunting labyrinths created within different spaces for example his work Quiver of Arrows, where he welded together four vintage air stream caravans, creating a compressed, dilapidated space in which to reflect on the American dream.
The Pumpkin Palace
This installation is a huge contrast form exterior to interior. On the outside it appears to be a middle eastern hospital but with its windows covered in Arabic newspapers, but when one enters the piece it is no longer a bus, but a claustrophobic maze of gloomy nooks and crannies. Each space within the bus symbolises a different faith.
In all of his works he creates a discomforting space, that is different to what is first thought from the exterior of the piece. With these installations he establishes a distinct atmosphere, which is something I would like to achieve with my vardo piece/pieces.
