Cabin Fever

This installation by Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller creates a sense of a place without actually making the place fully visible, but hinting at it through sound and a single image.

The work consists of a wooden cabinet with a hole in the front revealing a diorama of a cabin in a forest at night. Alongside the object and the image there is a sound track of woodland sounds followed by a scene in which a car pulls up, footsteps into the cabin, a muffled argument, a gunshot and a ringing telephone. Lights also flicker within the cabinet to suggest what is taking place inside the cabin.

This instillation gave me the idea that I do not necessarily have to built a real life size version of a Romany vardo, but I could establish an atmosphere through other mediums, such as sound, light and images, moving and still.
By not having a vardo as the center piece of my work it will allow me to explore different ideas and outcomes.
